Frequently Asked Questions - Authentication

Frequently Asked Questions - IP

How do I find out my IP Address?

You can ask your IT staff for your range or you can confirm this by visiting our IP Address Tool which will display the IP address that our system sees that you are coming from when you log on.

We use a Firewall and Proxy server does that affect my IP address?

Yes Firewalls and Proxy Servers often replace the IP address of the end users computer with their own. This does not cause a problem with IP authentication as long as we have the global IP address of the firewall or server in your account. One requirement for this is that the firewall / proxy server is not shared publicly with other organizations. See also Configuring Firewalls and Proxy Servers for Gale Products

What is the format of IP addresses?

an IP address is comprised of 4 three number octets.

144.240.001.005

You can also represent ranges

144.240.001.* where '*' represents [0-255]

144.240.001.[128-192]

144.240.1.128/255.255.255.192

144.240.1.128/26 (CIDR notation)

Frequently Asked Questions - Password

How often should I change my password?

Schools, colleges and universities we like remote access passwords to change once a year to ensure that only current enrollees can access your subscription

How can I get a remote password?

You can contact Technical Support and request a password. Note that some databases are not available from off site.

Can I access all my databases remotely?

No not all of Thomson Gale databases are available for remote access. To find out about your subscriptions please contact Technical Support.

Can I place remote access passwords on the Net?

No we ask that you do not place remote access passwords on the net as this is against the license contract for access. If you would like to provide easier remote access for your patrons please contact Technical Support who will be able to help you with other methods of authentication.

Frequently Asked Questions about Referring URL

Why does the referring URL page need to be protected?

So that you do not give free access to your subscriptions to those that have not paid to have access (to unauthorized users).

How can I tell if my page is protected?

If you can visit your web page from outside your network (without being challenged for user credentials) (such as AOL or MSN) then your page is not protected. Gale Technical Support can assist you with checking.

What is wrong with having free and open access to my subscriptions?

As a requirement of the license agreement for your subscription, you are obliged to ensure that those people accessing your libraries subscriptions, are valid patrons of your library.

Will this affect my InfoMarks?

This will not affect your use of InfoMarks.

Will I have to change my access URL's?

If you are using fully authenticated URL's (ones with username and password embedded) then you will have to change the URL's, otherwise no change will be necessary.

Frequently Asked Questions - Cookie

What happens if I clear my cookies?

Your authentication token has been deleted and you will need to re-enter your password to reset the cookie

What happens when I renew my subscription?

You will have to re-enter the password when the cookie expires.

Can I place cookie passwords on the net?

No, some Gale databases are not available remotely and contractually you have to ensure that the users accessing the subscriptions are library patrons or members. Passwords issued to site administrators for the purpose of acquiring authentication cookies should not be distributed to patrons for remote access. If a cookie password is compromised, it is impossible for us to revoke the unauthorized user's token without removing or changing the authentication profile for all users.

Can I clear my cookies?

Yes, you are able to remove your Gale cookies at the following page.

Frequently Asked Questions - Barcode

Can I "deactivate" one of my users' access?

Not with this method. We do have a more "advanced barcode authentication" which requires that you can generate a complete list of active patrons/students which can be authenticated against. This method is prone to more problems as it needs the list of numbers to be updated regularly

Can all barcodes work?

No some barcode numbers contain special characters such as slashes that cannot be used in passwords. Please contact Technical Support if you have any questions regarding your barcodes for authentication.

How Does Authentication affect my usage statistics

Depending on your method of authentication your usage will be recorded as either inside or outside. "Inside" usage is considered on campus or in your libraries network. "Outside" usage is considered to be off campus, at home or not on your libraries network. The table below lays out how the different methods of authentication are recorded:

Authentication Method Usage Recorded As
IP Authentication Inside
Password Authentication Inside
Library Managed Passwords (Scripting, RPAS) Outside
Referring URL Outside
Cookie Authentication Inside
Barcode Authentication Outside
User Defined Authentication Depends on a flag as passed by a user
