Dear Advisors:                                                             April 22, 2004

First, we'd like to thank you for your participation, your insight, and your commitment to this project. Your input will greatly inform our efforts toward designing our new platform. You are collaborating with us on developing a new user experience that we hope will be of significant value to the community of libraries, students and researchers we are all serving.

Description: PowerSearch facilitates searching across Gale’s vast collection of electronic reference and research products, and provides libraries with an elegant solution for managing that content. While Gale and the marketplace recognize the need for discreet databases, librarians who purchase a range of Gale products have repeatedly requested the ability to cross-search the entire collection using a single user interface, eliminating the need for redundant searches or learning new user interfaces. Our goal is to design a single platform that delivers the clean, inviting interface and high-level search functionality you’ve come to expect from our InfoTrac and GaleNet products; capable of accessing the rich depth and scope of all the Gale content in your collection.

Impact: All users will have access to a wealth of periodical, reference and primary source information through a single system. The most obvious benefits of PowerSearch are:

  • Ease of product use

  • Ease of product training

  • Improved subject guide

  • Improved indexing

  • Accelerated research process

  • Reinforces multi-source, multi-discipline learning concepts

  • Remote access to content 24x7

  • Collection customization

  • And more…

Your participation: We appreciate your willingness to participate in this ongoing project. Soon we’ll be contacting you for some feedback on our prototype, PowerSearch v 1.0. This pilot project introduces basic cross-searching functionality, and allows us to compare our New Vocabulary with the Subject Indexing currently employed in existing Gale online databases.

Later this year we will be contacting you again, and asking you to participate in a more extensive Customer Feedback effort on PowerSearch v 2.0. Currently in development on our new InfoTrac Gold platform, IPS v 2.0 will be a full product release, and will enable many InfoTrac periodical databases to be cross-searched with Gale Virtual Reference Library eBook collections.

In 2005 and 2006, we look forward to migrating more of our Gale online product line onto our new cross-searchable platform, bringing heightened functionality and more fluid access to all of your Gale electronic resources. We hope you’ll be available to continue participating in our Advisory Group on future releases of PowerSearch. Your feedback greatly informs our ability to design agile, effective, easy-to-use products for your library’s diverse community of users.

We appreciate your time and expertise, and look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Gary Pollack
