Torrey Pines High School Library Media Center

Friends of the Library

Our Mission
Our mission is to support the Library Media Center (LMC) in meeting the intellectual, curricular and leisure reading needs of the entire student body at an exemplary level as defined by the California School Library Association Standards and Guidelines for Strong School Libraries through advocacy, fundraising, programs and activities.

Friends of the Library Activities

  • Host special events such as Cutting-Edge Conversations, the Barnes & Noble Bookfair, Student agendas and Rummage Sales with proceeds going to the library
  • Purchase student resources such as books, DVDs, CDs, study and art prints
  • Purchase online subscriptions
  • Donate to relevant non-profit foundations when hosting Cutting-Edge Conversation speakers
  • Serve as liaison to the TP Foundation

Goals for '09-'10
The Torrey Pines LMC continues to focus on providing excellent student/staff online subscriptions and additional e(electronic) books accessible 24/7 at home and school.  Our goals are as follows:

  • Purchase of high-quality learning materials: The Library Media Teacher, in conjunction with teachers in the English Language Development program, special education and regular classroom teachers, School Site Council, department chairs and Friends of the Library, purchases high quality, appropriate and relevant resources.  Materials are purchased across the curriculum content areas with an emphasis placed on high-interest content areas and recreational reading.
  • Book selection is based on professional journal reviews, credentialed librarians, library and special subject associations, committee member contributions, student and teacher input.
  • Bring special guests, exemplified through the Cutting-
    Edge Conversations
(CEC) to meet our students. Since 2005, these guests are "ordinary people doing extraordinary things."  The CEC guests offer a view of positively participating in our local and world communities thus positively impacting the lives of others.
  • Promote the newly purchased resources during freshmen orientations, class presentations to upperclassmen and  acquisition lists to students and teachers through our Research Links webpage.
  • Create an attractive, inviting and comfortable environment through exhibits, displays, special events and comfortable furniture.

Why Friends of the Library Needs You
Dramatic cuts in school funding make your contribution to the Library Media Center more important now than ever before.

  • Books per student: Our book collection is considerably below the California School Library Association's Standards and Guidelines for Strong School Libraries recommendation of 20 books per student for an exemplary facility. However, as of October 2009, we have 9 books per student and we fall into the "at risk" category.
  • Curricular needs: Our Library Media teacher always works closely with teachers and students to provide the best quality materials for academic research and recreational reading.

Financial support from the Friends of the Library continues to be a critical component for our collection development.
